The important part of counting

I’ve been teaching my son the numbers from the day he was born. Wha..!!!! Well, I would cradle him singing some songs I knew and then when I exhausted the pleasant lullaby songs, I hit on the idea of reciting the set of positive integers as far as I have ever done since school. It was a fool proof plan. What could go wrong? They would never get exhausted.

I started from 1 and counted to 200. I checked if my son was asleep. If asleep, abort; else continue and set next check interval at increment of 200. It was a brilliant plan and worked every time. My son would fall asleep somewhere near 600.

On few days I remember skipping the songs,  starting with the numbers and finding success near 200. The joys of parenthood… priceless.

I got bored and started the Fibonacci series. It was a disaster. The long silence when I tried to remember the previous number and the enduring silence when I calculated the sum was enough to make my son check if I was still there.

Arithmetic progressions were so convenient for my purpose. So I’d do progressions till 500 for d in {1,2,3,4,5}.

When my son was 1y3m young,  he could RECITE numbers from 1-20 in sequence. I thought it was okay to teach him to count. That’s when I realised how much we take numbers for granted.

In the beginning, he would not follow my lead when I pointed to the unique items like blades on a fan or cows on the street or flowers on the potted plant. He would just make a dash for it and count till 10 (with a big flourish for 10 because I did so).

Next month he started following my finger when I pointed to the items I was counting but if I stopped, he’d give me a blank stare, questioningly start where I left off and go as far as he could.

When he was 1y6m young, I started placing every counted item in his hand. So I was counting small things like almonds or carrots or torn off pieces of a dosa/idli. Maybe I connected well in this effort. Because he’d stop when the items stopped coming. A few days later he hit on an idea… When I stopped giving fresh items, he would place the things in his possession on the floor and count the same units again up until the number he could recall. I say UNITs because that’s the day I realized the idea of counting reach item only once. I knew it all along and didn’t think it was much of a task but here it was…a bare concept in the theory of counting.

Around the same time I introduced zero. I was on the phone with a bank employee for my credit card queries. As part of the usual verification, I was asked for my phone number and I gave it. My son was around. He probably thought his dad had gone nuts.  The last 3 digits of my phone number are “002”. After I gave my number to the bank staff, my son came over and said “0-1-2”. He said this many times prompting me to repeat after him. After I repeated 0-1-2, he walked away satisfied. We use the symbolic uniqueness of numerals for identification rather than for counting. Another surprising observation in that moment was, he didn’t continue after 2. He stopped at 2. It was more like he was correcting my knowledge of the numbers and their sequence.

So, he knows that the numbers come in a sequence and he knows the sequence up until 20(in English. Till 10 in our mother tongue Telugu). Does he think of them as a finite set of sequential symbols? I dread at that thought since the very reason I sang numbers to him in the first place was because they were infinite and spared me some recall/imagination.

Coding while asleep

I was working on making a tool to download conversations over biba. One night just before I realized I was too sleepy to continue coding, I wrote this(image below) and came back to it early next morning after waking up.

Capture

How I knew last night that I was too sleepy to code…

  • I kept thinking the red squiggly below the function name was a spell check indicator.
  • I actually made a spelling mistake repeating the ‘in’ in “exist in”.
  • After I hover on the function name, I realize that “not all code paths return a value”. And for the life of me I couldn’t figure out which code path is missing a return statement!

Ban sports if you want to ban Jallikattu

I’m not mincing any words in the title. That’s that and let me explain if it intrigues you.

Sports are for everyone but only the best play at the highest level

To be at the stumps with Shoaib Akthar bowling to you in an ODI or to stand as a goalkeeper when Roberto Carlos is sprinting towards you uninhibited with God like control over the ball or to block a punch thrown by Mohammed Ali headed for your temple… you need to be a pro. The regular person watching the game on TV can’t be at the receiving end. Participants who tame the bull in Jallikattu are no different. It’s not everybody’s cup of tea to tame a superstar bull that won the previous year’s title. If you wish to ban Jallikattu because it has a vector of threat to the receiver, you must ban Cricket, Football and Boxing. In Jallikattu, like every other competitive sport, both parties are at the receiving end.

Need of the hour: Regulation, not a ban

Like how you need a shin guard, an elbow guard, a helmet and proper shoes for playing professional Cricket, there should be a regulation for participants in Jallikattu. A few points that I could think of are listed below but I’m sure a professional Jallikattu sportsperson could do better.

For the Bull:

  • Chain mail for its head and body
  • Rubber covering for its horns
  • The Bull should not be fed any “performance enhancing” food
  • The Bull should not have consumed liquor
  • The Bull should not be pierced or bitten to make it aggressive

For the participating persons:

  • A shin guard
  • Chain mail or kevlar jackets for the chest area
  • Only people with life insurance and medical insurance can participate and Insurance companies should not refuse claims for loss or damages caused while playing Jallikattu
  • (If this is a concern…)Only persons without a spouse and/or children should participate
  • Person shouldn’t have consumed performance enhancing drugs or alcohol
  • Person should not belong to any political party… 😉

I’m for Jallikattu. Protect the local gene pool.

How to get FREE credit report from CIBIL

Click here if you just want the steps and no stories. This is how you get an absolutely FREE credit score and report from CIBIL.

2018 Update: This is what the page(cibil.com) looks like in Feb 2018.
Feb2018

I have been checking my credit score once a year since Jan 2012 and I plan to continue doing so going forward. It has been a healthy report every year so why should I bother checking it repeatedly?

Iron out inaccuracies

In my first report I noticed that the education loan that I had closed after prompt payment, was indicating missed EMIs. The bank had moved all education loan numbers from their old format which was like ELxxxx15 to something like 111222333xxxx15. So my credit report had two education loans. One ELxxx15 which showed proper EMIs till the date when the account number was changed. Another 111222333xxxx15 which showed proper EMIs only after the date when the account number was changed.

I contacted the bank branch and they feigned ignorance of the issue. I then sent them a mail with all the contents and requested them to update the necessary channels so that my credit report doesn’t look bad to a person who doesn’t care about the bank’s internal reasons. In 2 months, I got a response from the bank stating that the issue had been sorted. I checked my credit report again and this time my score was higher and the discrepancy was corrected.

Credit card applications

Yea! That’s right. In my first report taken in Jan 2012, I also noticed how many credit cards I had applied for. That’s a bit scary. Anyone who knows the credit-score game will tell you that multiple credit checks by credit providers such as banks for loans and credit cards will actually bring down your credit score. So it is good to keep a watchful eye (once a year is sufficient for me now).

See the outcome of your financial discipline(or the lack of it)

That doesn’t need an explanation so I’ll move right ahead.

Free report

For a few months now, I’ve been waiting for Jan 2017 to begin. Jan is when I apply for my credit score each year. Jan 2017 is even more special because of announcements citing ‘one free credit score report from 2017′(Refer links [1][2][3]). Now that I’m here, I’m going to record the process and share it with you so that the elusive promised report is actually attainable. Carefully note that there is still an option to get it by payment, even if it is your first report for the year.

UPDATE:

I got the credit report by email. Roughly 7 working days after I applied through snail mail.

Will we see a small vacuum in Indian banking?

Basic principle of banking: Borrow at low interest and lend at higher interest; run the show with the earnings.

Elaborating

I deposit Rs.100/- in a bank. The bank promises to give me Rs.104/- at the end of 1 year. So that’s 4% interest. In the mean time, the bank might lend that 100 to a someone else at an interest of 11% and get back Rs.111/- at the end of 1 year. So the bank is earning Rs.7/- from my Rs.100/-.

After Demonetization of Rs.1000 and Rs.500 notes

People are depositing money they’ve stored in those denominations. As of current estimates, a total of 7Lakh crore rupees have entered the banks due to this operations. Another side-effect is that some businessmen/industrialists are seeing decreased purchases and reduced business. Reduced business causes lower revenues/profits which means banks may not be able to recover the monthly EMIs from these borrowers. That also means that the bank should pay interest of SB account holders out of its own pocket.

Assuming that the people withdraw their money 1 year after depositing it into the bank, won’t the banks be hard pressed for cash due to a staggering business environment? Will the banks pay SB account interest based on future promised EMIs?

It’s a boy

I’m now a dad. Been so for 4 months now and I’m enjoying most of it. “Being responsible” is now a whole new level that just can’t be explained without experiencing it. My son is going to be the center of my universe for a few years.

Guilt – unpardonable

Last week, I had to attend a family gathering, a celebration. On the eve of travelling to Chennai from Bengaluru, I had a sore throat. It seemed manageable… I didn’t have to do much talking during the event. So I figured I might as well meet my family in the opportunity that affords itself every alternate week (medium distance relationships). On arrival, I recollect a bout of cough and phlegm… harmless on any normal day. Something changed in the last kilometer of this trip and I now had a well established flu and maybe even fever.

Of late, summer has been arriving early each year. Early March now seems like midsummer.

There are a couple of people in my extended family who are autistic. I know the events in their baby-hood which led to that state for they were born healthy and with good response till their 6th month after birth. Both had mild flu followed by fever at the onset of summer.

Today, after 45 years, it is unfortunately difficult for them to integrate into society. With an unacknowledged sense of protection enduring as long as their parents endure, their journey forward seems lank. Their siblings (plural); happy, safe and secure in their little world, don’t want to tend to them. I have known and understood this right from the time it was possible for me understand these things.

Thanks to some medicines and few hours of rest, the fever was ruled out in a day. One week in, I’m still recovering from flu.

Sunday.. Show day… The event went off well. Saturday’s austerity for socializing with my family seemed well compensated on Sunday. After the event, I packed my bags and got back home in Bengaluru.

It’s sort of a tradition for the first kid of the family to be delivered at the wife’s mother’s place. Every alternate week I travel to Chennai to meet my wife and son(3 months old).

On Tuesday, my wife texted that my son was cranky and probably had flu.

Guilt – unpardonable.
